IN THE EARLY DAYS of our nation women were partners with their men in establishing a foothold in the communities of the new nation, but, since they were not allowed to vote, they expressed themselves in other ways.

One of the ways they found to express their political opinions was in designing and naming, quilts for their favorite causes and political candidates.

Some of the early quilt names were, "54-40 or Fight", to do with our quarrel with Canada on boundary lines, "Drunkard's Trail", pointing up the evils imbibing too much and "Free Trade", a great political dialog about tariffs in the 19th century.
