Fruit Quilt - 1930's Techy Newspaper Pattern
Fruit plays a great part in our every day life. This is a lovely and unusual quilt pattern. You will receive copies of the 25 fruit squares, the tree border pattern, the quilt layout and instructions.
Margaret Techy's Fruit Quilt was originally published in 1930's newspapers. There are 39 block designs in this quilt, including the fourteen fruit trees. The fruit designs are approximately 6" square, designed to be transferred onto a 9" muslin square (with a finished size of 8 1/2" square each).
This will give you a quilt 63 x 81 inches, less seams. Now, to make a larger size add a color border possibly the same as the plain quilted blocks or a few shades darker.
Each design includes a description of the fruit and color suggestions. The pattern can be embroidered in outline stitch, or long-and-short stitches, giving a solid effect. Appliqué is very effective also or a combination of both types of needlework.

When you are ready to make a square, print it out and trace the design directly onto your fabric, using the method which suits your style best. Per the original pattern: Fold the pattern... to get the center. ... Slip a piece of carbon paper underneath - and trace the pattern carefully with a well pointed pencil leaving fine marks. Today you can also use an inexpensive transfer pen available in sewing and craft stores. To aid in tracing you can use a quilting light box, or well-lit window as women of previous generations did. |
