Old English - 1933 Embroidery/Redwork Quilt Pattern

by Margaret Techy - 25 Jacobean designs

The Old English quilt pattern is a vintage pattern by Margaret Techy. It was published one each Sunday only, in the Woman's Magazine and Amusement Section of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.  The quilt layout diagram began the installments on Sunday, September 17, 1933.

Each design shown within the circular medallions was adapted from old English embroideries of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.  Many of them could be seen, at the time of the publishing, at the Victoria Albert Museum in London.

There are 25 circular designs in this quilt.  Each one measures six inches finished.  When all these circular medallions are embroidered they are appliquéd to the foundation material and quilted.

These quilting patterns were designed to use several strands of six-strand D.M.C embroidery cotton.   To work the design use several strands of six-strand D.M.C. embroidery cotton, or fine crewel wool in various colors. Buy several shades of green, old rose, blue, purple, yellow, red, brown and henna.  The stitches are a matter of choice. Each design can be executed with any well known ones, such as French knot, outline, satin, chain, buttonhole, long-and-short stitches, or a combination of all three.
